Kiah P. Ziells, 2016 B.S. Environmental Biology/Chemistry minor candidate
Originally from Duluth, Minnesota, Kiah graduated from high school in 2013. She left her hometown to pursue a degree in Marine Biology at the University of Southern Mississippi. After one year she changed her major to Environmental Biology and declared a minor in chemistry. During her sophomore year, she was a Resident Assistant, Teaching Assistant for the Biology Department and joined the Donahue Research Group. Her research focused on the chemical defenses of plant species, specifically Gamocheata coarctate in an effort to isolate compounds from this plant that may serve as potential pesticides. Kiah is currently working as a Park Operations Intern at Whitewater State Park in Minnesota. She will be transferring to the University of Minnesota, Duluth this fall to complete her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science. Her future educational goals are to earn the MD/Ph.D. degree.
Merwin "Mike" Scruggs, 2015 B.S. Biology/Chemistry minor
Mike is a resident of Mississippi, where he graduated from Southwest Mississippi Community College with an Associate of Arts degree in 2013. He is now finishing his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he will graduate in December of 2015. He joined the Donahue Research Group in the Spring of 2015, where he assisted in work on our halolactonization of enynoates for pyrone synthesis. Mike was accepted to the 2020 class of dental school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS.
Lorenzo Spencer, 2016 B.S. Biology candidate
Lorenzo is a Biological Sciences major at Southern Miss. He is a Hattiesburg native that aspires to attend medical school upon graduation in 2016. Outside of academics, Lorenzo is president of the Mu Xi chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., social chair for I.M.A.G.E., and a general member of Men of Excellence. He is also a Lucky Day Scholar, a Mississippi Rural Physician Scholar and an LSMAMP Scholar.
