Distinguished Scholar Program
Over the course of 2014-2015, we worked with the science faculty of Oak Grove High School to mentor a Distinguished Scholar, Samer M. Buti. In February of 2015, Samer presented his research "Natural Product Isolation and Biological Testing of the Passiflora Incarnata" at the Mississippi Science and Engineering Fair here in Hattiesburg. He was awarded a 1st place medal for his work and poster presentation. He subsequently went on to the state competition.
Amy Pham is currently a student at Oak Grove High School. She is originally from Portland, Oregon then moved to Jackson, Mississippi at a young age. Growing up she was fairly interested in science fairs. In the eighth grade she won third place MSEF Region 1 in the Category of Botany. During her sophomore year, she conducted research in the lab of Dr. Mac Alford at USM learning how to sequence DNA. Now her upcoming junior year she will be working with Dr. Donahue on a collaboration with Dr. Jacques Kessl on the study of the HIV integrase enzyme.
